ode to comfort food

when cannisters explode remember: bamboo
sword of peace strong as pliable prayer bowl
cups sweet rice chinese sausage bacon
peanuts shrimp moist as toisan nights
you are to new year as tamale leaf is to navidad

when fury frothes remember: lotus
frog oasis round as universe
embraces sticky rice chicken mushrooms
imparts fragrance temple gardens
calms beast within easy as baby finding his thumb

when crowd breaks into run remember: sesame
serrated hands returning wave to squids
drying beside you from clotheslines
you are farmer’s fast food wrapped around rice bite
soaked with soy garlic you are kimchee’s fleetest feet

ode to four friends

for jamae sori & kycc & ieumsae

at summer’s end twilight rests easy
round cornstalks. dragonflies lift off
leaf helipads. ribbons in five directions
colors festoon halmoni village tree

jing woongs surround sound. embraces
villagers inside concentric circle fields
nodding heads with grain glory.
pumpkin pride. tomato red redemption

jangku ki-daks hourglass sexy undulates
paths dusty with joy & sorrow’s footsteps.
we seeds of farmers past. eggplants
blushing indigo sins of fathers

buk du-dungs rolling thunder. lightening
lover’s ecstasy. sudden electric expanse
of sky. peasant road music to trod sod
seasons. marchers to dance urban arteries

kwaengari ji-kaengs heaven sori.
reddens firefly nights. plumps sticky
rice gratitude. frees leaf brown hands
to open poetry’s veins

pistil poetry prompt:

flash a story in a stanza.

rabbits to earth

ode to bedtime stories

1.
too bad, says rabbit to dragon king of sea, i left my liver
for your elixir home. hold up a sec & i’ll be back
before you can say ‘hippity hop.’ dragon squints.
like it takes time to fire up his seaweed brain.

2.
chang’e returns to window, pulls aside silk curtain.
sighs to earth floating dreamily in midnight sky. why
did we leave him behind, rabbit, why?

3.
a 10-spud family lives underground. their dirt-for-dinner is
ruined by lovers screaming their eyes off two yams overhead.
shut up! yells halaboji. or get a damn motel room! but
horny howls dive deep into the dirt. driving leaves to kamikaze
from trees. rob roots of rest. spoil cloud ear taichi pose
of rabbits & morning commute of bears.

4.
shring! yi holds his fist open against his cheek for half a breath.
damn you! screams three-legged crow spinning earth’s 9th sun
into fiery nosedive. yi pumps his fist. down to one sun
earth ends its sentence as hot skillet. i can take off these
stinking boots. yi grins. maidens will flock singing my name.
chang’e & i will drink elixir to palace on moon. he teletexts her.
coming home, woman. famished. get my dinner ready.
moon shudders. no one answers.

ode to village musicians

—after li changgeng*

poet day laborers sing your grief pitch perfect. we start as unpaid child performers shrieking from organ grinder’s shoulder during family fights. we wail louder than the belt across our backs. distract disaster down storm drains. throw voices upside heads. dance the monkey grind.

i rant/ you rave. year after year until its clear. how to mule this mofo called sorrow. without crashing and ashing out. we work the crowd. pass hat. slap backs. pick banana pockets. growl da ancestors dis/ da ancestors dat/ da ancestors dis-n-dat.

we sleep one eye stuttery. rant one lip twitchy. howl one beat short of werewolf fur. we bang coffins sealed in folly. get free card: protect without smother. entertain without flatter. practice. practice. practice. single wail that rickshaws spirit straight through gate–comes only after 10,000 rehearsals. expect mania. capture its arc.

we drama queens & court jesters. sockfoot prophets & straight-up fools. your loss is our bread-n-butter. rice-n-kimchee. rubber neckers? maybe. grief vultures? mos def. we promise to make your funeral one villagers will rave about. long after you’ve butterflied into single red leaf dancing atop maple tree.

ode to stomata

labia guard dogs
we check gas light
water bonafides

every inch underside
eve’s apple leaf
we 99,000 amazons

conspire sun
inspire osmosis
transpire dream
of a moist planet

swollen vulva sentries
we greet sailors
welcome fleet week

come night we eve
darkside underbrella
dodge dust toss drunks
thwart premature vaporization

no sun no sin no thesis
no foto finish
no gassed swabbies

only chloroplast
only chorusgirl
only deep sleep
only baby mouth

millions suckling silver
side of your green
you say tomato
i say stomata
